In October, Osceola County had a 2.9% unemployment rate.  This was the County's lowest recorded monthly unemployment rate which was currently 3.3% in September 2018 and 2019.  Among Michigan's 83 counties Osceola County is tied with four other counties for Michigan's 9th lowest unemployment rate.

The West Michigan Region Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is starting a special initiative to assist at least 50 new businesses get launched this year!  If you have been considering or at the beginning stages of starting your own business, you should attend one of their unique one-hour information sessions.  You’ll learn about business trends for 2019, why half of all businesses fail, 7 steps to correctly start your business, upcoming pitch competitions where you can win free money, and how the accelerated services of the SBDC's Launch NOW Initiative can increase your chances of success.  All attendees will receive their “Guide to Starting and Operating a Small Business.”

Seven of these events will take place between December 2nd and December 19th.  Their is no cost to attend.

In September, Osceola County had a 3.3% unemployment rate.  This matched the County's all-time unemployment rate which occurred in September 2018.  For those interested in data, the County's highest unemployment rate occurred in March 1983 at 23%.

October 7, 2019 Osceola County, along with many communities across the U.S. participated in Manufacturing Week.  A total of 317 middle school students from 4 schools completed 24 tours at 6 manufacturers.   

August 8, 2019 Osceola and Mecosta Counties will be holding Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 4th.

June 18, 2019 The Community Development Office created the City of Evart Opportunity Zone Prospectus for anyone interested in investing in Evart or the Evart Opportunity Zone (Census Tract 26133970400).  The prospectus provides an overview of the Opportunity Zone program, an overview of the City of Evart and the Opportunity Zone, additional business incentives, and further details of the investment opportunities.  Printed copies can be obtained by contacting the Community Development office at (231) 832-7397.

 April 17, 2019 New resources were added to the Resources section of the Small Business Tool Kit.

March 25, 2019 Demolition of the former Marion Hotel is completed.  Completion of this project removes a blighted structure in the middle of the Village of Marion and opens up needed parking for the township hall, Village offices, and a business located across the street.

 January 23, 2019 On January 23, 2019 Mr. Tim Mroz; Vice President, Strategic Initiatives from the Right Place Inc. and Mary Kay Shaver, Partner, Varnum LLP, provided a presentation on Opportunity Zones to a group from the City of Evart.  In attendance were representatives from city government, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), businesses, education, and non-profits.  The group learned about what an Opportunity Zone is, how they were designated, how they work, what an Opportunity Fund is, how they can be created, what they can invest in, and the Next Steps Evart can take.  Mr Mroz's presentation slides can be viewed from this site.

October 10, 2018 The International Trade Program has a new allocation of State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) funds available for eligible small business concerns.  On September 19, 2018, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) awarded Michigan the maximum state award of $800,000 in MI-STEP funds for FY19.  With additional support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, total available funding for FY19 is over $1.6 million.

September 26, 2018 The Community Development office will be one of twelve speakers at the Osceola County Employer Resource Forum scheduled for noon to 2:00 pm at the Reed City Depot.  Contact the Community Development office, 832-7397, for more information.

September 12, 2018 Going PRO Talent Fund (formerly Skilled Trade Training Fund) -- FY 2019 grant application period opens.  Companies in the Michigan Works! West Central service area have been extremely successful in obtaining theses funds.  Since its inception in 2014 Michigan Works! West Central has helped 45 companies in our six-county service area secure nearly $2,000,000 that was used to train more than 2,000 workers

September 5, 2018 Nine proposals to the RFP for Environmental Consulting Services for Environmental Site Assessments and Related Activities were received.  The contract was awarded to SME from Grand Rapids.

August 2018 The West Michigan Regional Dashboard design and data refresh is completed.  It now contains 37 indicators; 17 economic, 14 social, and 6 environmental.
